  1. Sign Up Bonus

A sign-up bonus is a bonus offered by poker rooms that you receive when you register and deposit money in their site. Bonuses vary in size, but all of them are fairly similar in terms and conditions. There are some extremely large bonuses being offered and there are others that may seem insignificant; important to remember is that the larger bonuses often come with conditions such as playing a certain number of hands before your bonus is released.

  2. Matching Bonus

A matching bonus is usually (but not always) a sign-up bonus that matches your initial deposit up to a certain amount, some of the amounts being quite substantial.

  3. Affiliate

    What is?
When you sign up for Full-Tilt poker, PartyPoker or 888 Poker, through the learn.PokerNews site; PokerNews immediately is considered your affiliate because you signed up for the rooms listed using our promotions on offer.

  4. Freerolls

A freeroll is a tournament that is free to play, but may come with some conditions as well. For example, some rooms may have new depositor’s freerolls, or they may have freerolls for new users (meaning you don’t need to have deposited money to play it). There are also freerolls which are exclusive to affiliate websites, such as a PokerNews freeroll, where only PokerNews players may play.

  5. Support Issues

The poker rooms that we have reviewed are all well known for their good support, but it is important to remember a few things when dealing with online poker support. Online poker is a massive industry and we at PokerNews always think it’s better to stick with the bigger rooms as they are well established, and are not going anywhere. With that in mind, your support issues may take more than 1 day to rectify. Getting frustrated is a constant threat, but is not a good way to get anything done. Service is almost always top notch in the poker industry, as the players are their number one priority, so patience is key. Your issue will always be remedied. Always!

  6. What was ‘Black Friday’?

The day the US Justice Department shut down the three biggest most popular online poker rooms, to American players. PokerStars, Full-Tilt, and Absolute Poker were hit and hit hard, with all of their bank accounts being seized and subject to investigation. The general consensus in most states in America is that online poker is illegal for its residents. This trend is changing, however, as states are starting to regulate online gaming.

  7. What is the WPT or EPT I see in promotions?

When you see promotions that say things like ‘stand a chance to play on the WPT’ or ‘Play the EPT with PartyPoker today’ the abbreviations all represent some sort of poker tour. So with the promotions you can win your way to playing on the ‘World Poker Tour’ or the ‘European Poker Tour’.

  8. FastForward and Rush Poker

Rush poker and FastForward poker are the same thing on different poker rooms. Rush poker was Full-Tilts innovation which allows you to fold your hand at any stage (even when it is not your turn) and be moved to a new table and dealt new hole cards immediately (which you can also fold, and be moved to a new table). The players at the table do not know you have folded your cards until the play comes around to you.
It is a game for players who love fast paced action without having to multi table.

  9. Rake

When a hand is played at an online poker room a set percentage of the final pot is taken by the casino. This percentage is called the rake. There are different ways that rake is calculated, but the two main ways that you would encounter are the percentage rake method, and the incremental rake method.
    - Percentage method: depending on the poker room you have chosen, at the end of the hand, between 2.5% and 5% is taken off the final pot.
    - Incremental method: in this method, again depending on the poker room you have chosen, 1c is taken for every 20c, or 5c for every $1 in the pot.

  10. Administration costs?

There are no administration costs involved with online poker rooms. The only time you might be charged admin fees is when you are transferring money into the online poker room.

  11. Rake Back

As mentioned above, poker rooms take a small amount off each pot played. Poker rooms, however, offer great rewards for playing at their rooms. The main reward is something called ‘rake back’. The room will give you a percentage of the rake that they have taken from each pot, and give it back to you. So, for an example, if they take 5% off every pot, they will offer you the opportunity to get 25% of whatever the portion of the rake you put into the pot, back.

  12. Multi Tabling

Being able to multi table is what draws people to the online world. To multi table is exactly what the name suggests, playing more than one table at the same time. Multi tabling isn’t however a prerequisite, you may play one table for as long as you like, you will be no less valued than the next guy.

  13. Preferred Seat

A tool for the ‘multi tabler’; you may select a seat at the table, and from that moment on, every table you sit at, you will automatically be placed in that position. This does not mean that the other players are shuffled around to accommodate you; it means that the table is rotated so that you are seated in the same seat at every table making it easier to follow the table.

  14. Playing Hours

Online poker never sleeps! Unless there are scheduled maintenance times, you are able to play at any hour of the day. Important to remember is that there are peak hours, where you will be spoilt for choice, which is an element of poker that is under rated. Peak hours, however, should not dictate when you get your chips.

  15. Railing - Railbirds

This is a favourite past time of the online low stakes player. All online poker rooms have the option of watching whichever table you fancy. The act of watching a table you are not sitting at is referred to as ‘railing’. It is a direct reference to watching a live poker table from the rail that surrounds the table. Railing the ‘pro’s’ while they grind the high stakes tables is an excellent way to get your poker dose for the day, if you are not able to play for whatever reason.

  16. Software Safety

Poker rooms rely on the security of their software. They are constantly improving your gaming pleasure, but even a higher priority than that, is the safety of your account. Your money, once it arrives in the poker room, is completely safe. Even during maintenance down time, there is no chance of your money disappearing, as long as you have kept your details safe and sound.

  17. Depositing and Withdrawing

Depositing and withdrawing are extremely simple; as easy as 3 clicks, and a waiting period. There is no possible way for your money to disappear during this process. There are a number of different ways to deposit and withdraw your money, for a break down on the different ways click here!

  18. Editor's Rating

The editors rating seen in the reviews of the poker rooms is a rating out of 10 for that particular room, decided by the PokerNews staff. The staff use a number of different criteria, including traffic, software, customer service, and many more, to decide on the number posted in the review. The rating is not a ranking system, meaning that more than one room may be a 9 out of 10.

  19. Add-on’s and Re-buys

When playing a tournament, either online, or live, in the tournament details, you may see add-ons and re-buys available. A re-buy is an option to re-enter the tournament when you are knocked out. Some tournaments will have unlimited re-buys (during a time period), while others, known as freezeouts, will have no re-buys. An add-on is an option to increase your stack by a specified amount, at the end of a specified period.

  20. Is online poker rigged?

A comment often thrown around by people who dislike poker for whatever reason; but the comment is not based in any fact. The dealing process is completely random, meaning that there is no chance to fix it. A simple test would be to ask yourself: would a well-established poker room ever risk their entire business, to rig a few hands? The answer is no.

  21. How many players may enter a tournament?

While tournaments will always have a maximum number of entrants, this is only restricted by server sizes, and are generally never filled. The only issue to worry about when wanting to register for a tournament is the start time. Tournaments, unlike a sit-n-go, will have a start time not based on entrants.

  22. What is disconnect protection?

Some poker rooms offer tables that have disconnect protection, which is simply a way of making sure you cannot be folded automatically due to a disconnection. The moment you disconnect, you will be treated as all-in (without all you chips being put in the middle), and the hand is considered over for you. Alternatively, you will be giving a set amount of time to re-connect, before your hand is folded for you.
Some players do not appreciate their opponents hand being considered all in on disconnect, as players have been known to abuse the system when put in a difficult spot against players who give them issues.

  23. Player Transfers

As is often the case, your friends will hop on the poker wagon fairly soon after hearing how much you enjoy the game, but as they are new, they might not have the means or even want to deposit money. You are able to send them as much, or as little, as you like, depending on the rules of each poker room.

  24. My password doesn’t work!

All the poker rooms reviewed and promoted by learn.pokernews have a built in password recovery system. It is important to note that the poker rooms may not change your password without your permission, so there is no possible way for the error when entering your password to be on the side of the poker room. Hint: Never give out your password to anyone if they ask. Any respectable company will never ever ask you for your password. If someone want's your password they might be running a phishing scam.

  25. Can I ever be cheated while playing online poker?

As with everything in life, there will always be people who will not play by the rules. Collusion is a very real phenomenon, but the top poker rooms have all gone to great lengths to intervene. Collusion teams have been set up; with collusion (or cheating) support lines are available.
If collusion is really something that bothers you, stick to tournaments, as seating distribution is completely random, so sitting next to your buddy is incredibly unlikely.

  26. What is allowed in the chat window?

Refer to our poker etiquette to have a broad understanding on what is allowed and what isn’t.

  27. How can I learn to play poker?

Here at learn.pokernews we provide information for the completely ‘New to Poker’ player. With this in mind, we have built a journey that will build a foundation on which to improve your skills, and be able to handle your own in conversation, and at the felt!

  28. Is it still illegal to play poker in the USA?

Poker in America is an extremely grey area. Online poker is being regulated and licensed on a state level in some states, as has recently been done in Nevada. On a federal level, there are still questions as to the legality.

  29. What is the best online poker room for real money or play money?

  30. How do I protect my eyes, while playing online poker?

A good rule to live by is the rule of 20. Every 20 minutes, look at something else which is 20 metres away, for 20 seconds. This just gives your eyes a rest, while re adjusting.
If you are experiencing headaches or eye pain of any kind, always pop in at your optometrist for advice.

  31. During disconnection, is my account safe?

If at any stage the site goes down; be it disconnection, or maintenance, or a server crash, your money is safe. The safety of your account is the number 1 priority throughout the gaming industry. If it is the fault of the poker room, you will be taken care of.

If the disconnection is due to a poor internet connection, that is dealt with in accordance to each room's own policy.

  32. Do I need a high speed internet line to play online poker?

    The short answer is; probably.
Is it a requirement? No. Than why is the short answer probably? Because having a slow connection can mean 'timing out' in hands. The last thing a player needs is to lose connection during a pivotal hand.
